SPC flooring and laminate are two flooring categories that compete in some markets but have very different compositions and properties. This guide separates definitions from the buying details that must be confirmed.

Scope of this guide

The terms below are confirmed starting points. The quotation, availability and approved sample govern each order.

1. Definitions

SPC flooring (stone-plastic composite) is a rigid-core flooring made of stone powder and PVC. Laminate is a flooring made of wood-fiber boards with a printed decorative layer and a wear layer.

2. Composition comparison

The fundamental difference lies in the core of the material. This difference determines all other properties.

  • SPC: stone + PVC core (60-80% stone), 100% waterproof
  • Laminate: HDF board core, susceptible to water
  • SPC: heavier and more rigid
  • Laminate: lighter with a more wood-like feel

3. Water resistance

Water resistance is the most important difference for many markets. SPC is 100% waterproof across its entire surface; laminate is only water-resistant on the surface, but the core swells if water penetrates through the joints.

  • SPC: can be submerged without damage (verify manufacturer warranty)
  • Laminate: tolerates surface spills if cleaned quickly
  • SPC: ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and basements
  • Laminate: not recommended for areas with standing water

4. Installation

Both systems use floating click installation, but subfloor preparations differ.

  • SPC: requires a flatter subfloor; use manufacturer-recommended underlayment
  • Laminate: more tolerant of uneven subfloors; use standard underlayment
  • SPC: harder to cut (requires saw with plastic-rated blade)
  • Laminate: easy to cut with a standard saw

5. Durability and wear

Durability depends on the wear layer in both cases, but SPC has better impact resistance due to its rigid core.

  • SPC: high impact resistance (does not dent from falling objects)
  • Laminate: can dent from strong impacts
  • SPC: typically AC3-AC5 abrasion class
  • Laminate: available in AC1-AC5 depending on grade

6. How to choose for your market

The choice between SPC and laminate depends on the target market's climate, consumer budget and distribution channels.

  • Humid or tropical markets: SPC is the preferred choice
  • Budget-sensitive markets: laminate may have better price-to-aesthetics ratio
  • Commercial projects: SPC for its impact resistance
  • Residential renovation: both are valid depending on the room
